University of Eastern Finland ranked among the world's leading 200 universities in four subjects

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject published this July, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked among the world’s top 200 universities in four different subjects. The UEF was ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in Medicine, and among the top 150 in English Language and Literature. Furthermore, in Geography and Pharmacy & Pharmacology, the UEF was ranked among the top 200 universities in the world.

The mission of the University of Eastern Finland is to be among the leading 200 universities in the world by 2015 and, as demonstrated by the recent QS World University Rankings by Subject, this goal has now been achieved in four subjects. According to the Academic Rector of the University of Eastern Finland Jukka Mönkkönen, the results show that the university’s strategic choices and the measures taken to achieve them have proven successful.
”However, first and foremost this is a signal that the university’s researchers and teachers are committed to the university’s goals and they have done excellent work to promote the achievement of these goals. It is delightful to note that the number of our successful subjects is increasing, and this gives confidence for the overall possibilities of the University of Eastern Finland to succeed,” he says.

In the field of Medicine, the University of Eastern Finland improved its performance from 2011 and was now ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. In this year’s ranking, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked as the second best Finnish university, right after the University of Helsinki, which was ranked among the world’s top 50 universities. Out of other Finnish universities, the University of Tampere and the University of Turku were ranked in the rank range of 101–150, and the University of Oulu in the rank range of 151–200.

In addition to the University of Eastern Finland, also the University of Helsinki succeeded in the ranking in the field of English Language and Literature, and was placed in the rank range of 51–100. The University of Eastern Finland was ranked as the second best Finnish university also in Geography, where the first place was held by the University of Helsinki in the rank range of 51–100. In Pharmacy & Pharmacology, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked as the third best Finnish university. The University of Helsinki was placed in the rank range of 51–100, and the University of Turku in the rank range of 101–150.

Universities were compared using as criteria academic reputation, employer reputation and citations per faculty. In the comparison of citations per faculty, the University of Eastern Finland succeeded particularly well in the fields of Medicine and Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject by Quacquarelli Symonds was now published for the second time. The new ranking seeks to cater for the needs of prospective students and university teachers and researchers who are interested in the subject-specific level of education and research in different universities.
